England Home
Our week in London...We spent a week exploring the city. It was not nearly enough but we did
manage to squeeze in visits to the Albert and Victoria Museum, London City Museum, the Tower of London, Harrod's, Warr's (an H-D dealer),
the Maritime Museum, the War Museum, the War Cabinet Museum, the Churchill Museum, and ride(s) on the London Eye.
Our first day was spent on a double-decker bus tour of the city which presented some commanding views
of the area.
We also managed to be at Trafalgar Square for the 200th Anniversay Celebration of Nelson's victory over Napolean, and also
caught a showing of Les Miserable at 'The Queens Theater' in Leicester Sqaure, London's Theater district.
'Riverside' is the flat we rented in London, located on the waters
edge of the Thames and overlooking the Millenium Dome. It is on the Isle of Dogs, Henry VII's hunting grounds when he was king.
The area is in the midst of a revival currently. For years it was part of the 'Docklands' area where cargo was unloaded/stored, but
is now part of the trendiest parts of the city. It made a convenient home base for our week of sight-seeing in the city as a DLR station
(part of the London Underground) was only a few blocks away.
Greenwich While Jane and I flew out a day earlier and explored the surrounding
area, we visited Greenwich when the others arrived. It is a lovely city with many museums, including the Cutty Sark, Maritime Museum, Naval College,
and rambling shops in tiny streets. It also is connected to London with a tunnel that burrows beneath the Thames and lets you walk under the river.
While we took a train Docklands Light Rail (DLR) train over, we walked back to our flat under the river.
London These photo's were taken at various times over the course of the week and are not
necesarily in chronological order
Tower Bridge We had been to Tower Bridge previously, but Don and Mindy made an
extended visit to one of the most recognizable landmarks in London
Tower of London We spent an entire day at the Tower of London. We were
lucky to have been granted tickets to the Ceremony of the Keys and attended a few evening prior. The Ceremony has
been held every evening (by invitation only) for over 700 years and is when they lock the Tower for the night. It was a fascinating piece
of living history, but unfortunately cameras were not allowed. The Tower of London is the city's oldes museum and you can see the Royal Armoury,
the Crown Jewels, and more. Over 200+ people still live in the Tower, the Yeoman Warders and their families, who are entrusted with the security of
the Tower and give tours as well.
We managed a few days apart for sights as well and we found out later that we managed to visit Harrod's that same day as part of
our travels! Here are some highlights of one wonderful fall day...
Hyde Park Don & Mindy visited the 350+ acre park in London.
Greenwich Boat Tour Jane and I went to the Maritime Museum in
Greenwich and took a boat tour up the river.
London Eye Steve & Betsy took a daytime ride on the Eye.
Pubs We took a photo of every pub we stopped at. And of course, we had to
have a pint or two as well
Visit our Inn in Bar Harbor, Maine!
